For many of us, Athens has just been a layover on our way to and from the beautiful Greek Islands. Not anymore. Athens has so much more to offer. Excellent climate, cool hotels, wonderful food and shopping.
I have visited Athens a handful of times, but always on my way to or from the Cycklades. I did stop by Akropolis and Plaka (the old town), but that was it. I finally realized that the town has much more to offer. I especially fell for the Kifissia neighborhood, with the lush scenery, quiet streets and fancy shops. There are several good restaurants. Like You Yappa, where the locals eat and you get authentic, greek food. Or Buba, with killer drinks and asian food. If you are looking for a more fancy and upscale experience, then visit Eleas Gi.
There are a number of great hotels in Athens. My two favorites are Semiramis and Fresh Hotel. They are both design hotels, and they both have a pool. If you want to stay central, Fresh is your choice, but if you have more time, you should choose Semiramis in Kifissia. Super cool, fresh and luxurious.
So, next time you are planning a weekend-trip with your love, friends or family, consider Athens. The climate is awesome, the shopping is good, and there are a lot of excellent places to dine and sleep.
